Since 1986, The Russell Berrie Foundation has shown its commitment to address local health issues and well-being through supporting Englewood Hospital. In 1998, it announced a $ 5 million gift to create the Russell and Angelica Berrie Center for Humanistic Care at the hospital. The Center is the new home of a world-renowned cytodiagnosis and breast care center. It also houses centers for ambulatory surgery, radiology and imaging; and a rehabilitative medicine center for physical, occupational cardiac rehabilitation therapy.
The 90,000-square-foot project, which was concluded in 2004, included the construction of a beautiful lobby, a Japanese healing garden, a new food court, a 750-car parking deck and major improvements to the interior of the main hospital building. The building was designed to accommodate patient convenience, comfort, and privacy.
Announcing the completion of this major project, President and CEO Douglas A. Duchak said, "Six years ago, Russell and Angelica Berrie's $5 million challenge gift launched this campaign and with it, our efforts to create a truly extraordinary facility dedicated to outpatient care. We are so very grateful for the Berrie's deep commitment to the Medical Center, and to our friends in the community who have helped make our dream a reality."
Mr. Berrie said, “We wanted to make a donation that would make a meaningful difference to our community and encourage humanistic approaches to healthcare.”
The new complex is part of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center—a 520-bed acute care community teaching hospital located in Englewood, New Jersey, and affiliated with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
