Pioneering Diabetes Research and Care in Israel

The launching of D-Cure at President Moshe Katsav’s Residence in Israel

The Russell Berrie Foundation provided start-up funding in 2004 to establish D-Cure, a non-profit organization dedicated to cutting-edge research in diabetes and its complications. D-Cure aims to make Israel a leading force in diabetes research, bringing together experts from various fields and institutions in Israel to work toward combating the disease.

D-Cure funds diabetes research, creating a dynamic environment with the long-term goal of building multiple integrated diabetes centers in Israel that would house the highest levels of scientific research and clinical care. Activities include grants for high-quality scientific research projects, fellowships for Israeli diabetes scientists and opportunities and forums for scientists throughout the world to exchange the latest developments and ideas in diabetes research.

D-Cure collaborates on joint research projects with prominent institutions throughout the world, including The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University. Israel partners include:

  • Bar-Ilan University
  • Ben-Gurion University and the Soroka Medical Center
  • Haifa University
  • Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical Center
  • Tel-Aviv University and Sheba Medical Center
  • The Gertner Center
  • Technion – Israel Institute of Technology
  • The Weizmann Institute

Each year, D-Cure shares knowledge and findings with diabetes research facilities worldwide at its Russell Berrie International Diabetes Symposium.

“Despite Israel’s small size, it can turn into one of the world’s leading scientific centers—on the condition that there is cooperation among the researchers here and a significant increase in funding,” said D-Cure president Professor Itamar Raz. “With the signing of the agreement with the Berrie Foundation, we have met both criteria.”
