In recognition of their leadership and dedication, 10 extraordinary New Jersey residents were honored at the 29th annual Russ Berrie Making a Difference Awards ceremony on May 9. The Making a Difference Awards, supported by The Russell Berrie Foundation and administered by Ramapo College of New Jersey, distributed more than $150,000 to support these visionaries who are tackling some of the state's most pressing challenges — from homelessness and college readiness to breaking cycles of trauma and preventing youth violence.
Honoree Lewis Spears, flanked by Dr. Cindy Jebb and Scott Berrie, founded Jersey City’s Kismet of Kings, a mentorship and education program that prepares Black and brown young men for college and fosters in them an entrepreneurial mindset
"These community champions are selfless, fearless, and committed to creating lasting change in people's lives," said Scott Berrie, vice president of The Russell Berrie Foundation.
Since its founding in 1997 by the late Russell Berrie, the awards program has recognized 430 New Jersey residents and distributed more than $4 million to advance their life-changing work. This year's honorees join a powerful network of community leaders — ranging from nine to 90 years old — who have collectively formed an inspiring force for good throughout the state.
As Scott shared with the audience, “to [my father], there was no greater investment than believing in someone who was making the world better. And nearly 30 years later, look at what’s happened. The ripple effects of this program are everywhere… We are so proud to celebrate you today — and even prouder to stand beside you as you continue making a difference.”
