Advancing Democracy 3.0 through Citizens Assemblies

Citizens Assemblies have gained significant global momentum, with more than 500 assemblies held worldwide in the past five years that have engaged everyday citizens in democratic discourse that helps inform and influence policy decisions. With support from The Russell Berrie Foundation, the Heschel Center for Sustainability has successfully piloted this innovative model in Israel, calling it Democracy 3.0. Its Lab for Citizens Assemblies conducted assemblies in six diverse communities including Eilat, Ra'anana, and others, addressing local issues from climate adaptation and public space improvements to education. Assemblies brought together randomly selected Jewish, Arab, and Druze residents to learn about complex issues, engage in informed deliberation, and generate policy recommendations.
